Cocoa & Fig Buttercream Icing Styles

At Cocoa & Fig, a buttercream cake is a classic celebration cake with 3 layers of cake, 2 layers of buttercream filling along with a layer of buttercream icing on the exterior of the cake.  The exterior buttercream can be styled just enough to make the cake look festive and beautiful.  Fresh flowers, fruit, bunting, or a cake topper are a nice finishing touch, or if you prefer, we can write a personalized inscription on top.

Below is a sampling of some of our buttercream icing styles:

A Whimsical Birthday Cake

We were asked to create a cake inspired by Dr. Seuss for Abir's birthday, and here's a few shots of the final design.  All of the decorating was done in fondant with hand painted shading and outlining.  Almost too cute to cut into!

Custom Anime Birthday Cake

For the second time this year, Cocoa & Fig was asked to partner with Icing Smiles, a non-profit organization that provides custom celebration cakes to families impacted by the critical illness of a child. They sent us the request for a young girl named Sierra who was celebrating her 13th birthday. Sierra is a sister to a medical child named Gabriel who has been battling Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.  They asked if we could provide Sierra with a dream birthday cake of her favorite anime character, and we jumped at the opportunity.  See photos of the final design below!

Learn more about the wonderful organization at www.icingsmiles.org.

Cow Cake for Samantha's 2nd Birthday

Cocoa & Fig was asked to make a specialty cake for a very dear friend's daughter, named Samantha.  All she wanted for her 2nd birthday was "cows."  When asked if there was anything else she wanted she replied, "baby cows".  Well, then what would be more fitting for her cake than a baby cow?  So here is what we came up with. It's about 6 layers of cake and buttercream that was covered with white fondant along with colored fondant accent pieces.  We also airbrushed some pink rouge on her for the party.

MONSTERS CAKE

We love making cakes for kids! When this repeat client contacted us for another birthday cake she had one request: no more hockey cakes. Her sons are in love with hockey and only request hockey related cakes. But after 3 or 4, it was time to try something new. And what could be more fun than a kid's cake with MONSTERS? Based on a t-shirt design on Etsy, these monsters are more silly than scary.

They remind me of the characters on Fraggle Rock.
You remember Fraggle Rock don't you?

Ok, so maybe I've dated myself. But I still love these little monsters!

GO VIKINGS!

In honor of the big playoff game this evening between the Vikings and Saints, I though it only appropriate to share a recent cake with you. We make a lot of sports related cakes, but this was our first bright purple and gold. Perfect for the football loving member of any family!

Here's a close up of the hand-shaped football Joe created out of fondant. Perfect stitching!

Happy Birthday Dylan!

Go Vikings!
